Journalism and Trauma

The Dart Center for Journalism & Trauma is a Seattle-based organisation that looks at the problems facing journalists dealing with extreme situations of disaster and violence. Naturally its site is filled with material about reporting the tsunami.

It also has an interesting programme of meetings, some of them in London, where these topics are aired. Not mad about the word Trauma, though.

Free reference site

For quick access to reliable reference material, have a look at Answers.com.

A search-box on the opening page takes you to answers from known reference works rather than web pages. I found it quite successful on simple biographical queries, less good at answering actual factual questions.

The site is very keen you should download its 1-Click Answers software that will let you highlight a word on your screen and instantly look it up in the Answers.com encyclopaedias. Sadly, it's Windows-only, so I haven't tried it.

Google Made Simple

If you find it difficult to get at the powerful features of Google without a lot of special syntax or rooting through sub-pages, try Soople.

It's a new front-end someone has created, letting you access all the clever extra tricks of Google from a single page. Well worth a try, although some of the stuff isn't relevant for those of us outside the USA.
