Acronyms galore

Here's a handy index of acronyms, ACRONYMA. The front page boasts of containing more than 466,000 of the little devils, which sounds impressive to me.

I searched for RTF, the French radio and television organisation, and was pleased to see it come up with accents in place, which is why I was looking. Weirdly, however, a search for SNCF, the French railway system, worked in English but not French: "pas de résultats," it said.

AA, meanwhile, gave 152 responses, with America's Army at the top if you choose to list them according to "importance". Hmm…

Pedantry note: these examples, and most of the contents of the site, are not actually acronyms, which are words made up of initials. These are just sets of initials.

Finding corporations

If you're ever stuck trying to find the official website of an organisation or corporation, you could try Official Find. But be warned, it is solidly American in focus. A search for Tesco, for instance, will bring you an oil exploration company rather than the much-loved British supermarket chain.

Deep Throat

There probably aren't that many people around these days who even remember who Deep Throat was, but for those who do, here's a link to Vanity Fair's revelations about the Watergate source's identity.
